Jacqueline Freney grabs Women’s 100m backstroke gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Jacqueline Freney of Australia grabbed gold medal of Women’s 100m backstroke in S7 category on first day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Thursday, August 30.
Freney won the hearts of arena by proving her supremacy in the double lap backstroke event. She demonstrated her astonishing efforts in the 100m event and secured gold medal of the swim in a new Paralympic record time.
She stayed in a lead of two body lengths over her toughest challenger and hit the wall for gold medal with the timing of 1 minute and 22.84 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Kirsten Bruhn of Germany, who stayed almost 2.40 seconds slower and clocked a time of 1 minute and 25.22 seconds for silver medal.
The German specialist remained just 0.11 seconds ahead of Cortney Jordan of USA, who clinched bronze medal of the race by producing an effort of 1 minute and 25.33 seconds.
Jordan was trailed by Ying Zhang of China, who remained just a touch away from her former finisher and settled on the wall as fourth fastest swimmer by producing an effort of 1 minute and 25.63 seconds.
Zhang was traced by Rebecca Dubber of Australia, who remained 0.17 seconds slower from upsetting her preceding swimmer and finished fifth in the event by clocking a time of 1 minute and 25.80 seconds.
Sixth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Susannah Rodgers of Great Britain, who remained 0.23 seconds behind and surfaced on the finishing blockade with a timing of 1 minute and 26.03 seconds.
Rodgers enjoyed an advantage of 0.61 seconds over Freney’s teammate, Katrina Porter of Australia, who stayed 0.61 seconds slower and posted a time of 1 minute and 26.64 seconds for seventh position.
Last position of the backstroke discipline was obtained by Brianna Nelson of Canada, who stayed four body lengths behind and hit the wall for eighth position by submitting a time of 1 minute and 30.17 seconds.
Freney was excited with her record shattering effort and raked her medal at the medal ceremony of the event.
