Jacques Delmas appointed new coach of Perpignan
Jacques Delmas, the coach for Stade Francais, who was formerly coach for Biarritz as well, has been given thumbs up for being a successor to Jacques Brunel for the post of Head Coach of Perpignan.
After he got the Catalans the Top 4 title in 2009, Brunel will now leave by the end of the season. The reason for his leave is that he will now claim authority of Italy after the World Cup for four seasons. After Brunel's leave, the new Head Coach appointed
was 53-year-old Jacques Delmas.
This decision was confirmed on Wednesday by the club president, Paul Goze. Despite the fact that the coach of Ospreys, Scott Johnson has been the more desirable candidate for that position since long; because of a disagreement on financial terms regarding
his transfer, the clubs were unable to come to a conclusion.
After being appointed the new Head Coach of the Catalans, Delmas asked for being assisted by someone he has worked with prior to joining Catalans; he wanted Didier Faugeron to assist him at his new job. He has worked with Faugeron at Stade Francais and his
contract was not to be renewed in Paris. However, the USAP has asserted that the current assistant coaches, Bernard Goutta (forwards) and
Christophe Manas (backs) will continue with their jobs. Delmas has been a former hooker for Narbonne who led Biarrritz to the 2006 Heineken Cup Final and two other two French championship titles in 2005 an 2006 before a short, unsuccessful period working
at Stade Francais.
Due to the fact that Perpignan had a poor season comparatively,  the club wasn’t capable of qualifying the Heineken Cup for the next season. On the other hand Goze seems to be pretty content about the next term.
President of Perpignan said, “The objective is imperatively to finish in the top six of the championship. I told the players on Tuesday since the agreement had been reached and it was an open secret.”
He further added, “This week there is still one match left at Aimé-Giral, on Saturday against Castres, and it was the most basic politeness towards Jacques Brunel who is still our manager.”
