Jacques Kallis prepared to bowl against Aussies in Gabba Test – Cricket News Update
After steering the Proteas to a competitive 450 in their first innings of the Gabba Test with an impressive 147, veteran South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis is looking forward to helping the side with his damaging medium pace bowling over the next two days of the ongoing Test against Australia.
The prolific Cape Province all-rounder, who missed South Africa’s three-day warm up fixture against Australia A due to a chest infection, has had a stellar day on Sunday, not only with the bat but also in the field. The middle-order batsman played a dazzling knock of 147 runs, and took two crucial catches in the slip, of David Warner and Ricky Ponting, to help his side reduce the hosts to 40 for 3 in the 10th over of their innings.
While speaking to media reporters after stumps on day three, Kallis said that he was ready to take the ball on Monday if required.
"I'm ready to go," the veteran told reporters during a post-day media interaction on Sunday. "It's managing the workload as well, just got to be careful with that, but as far the body goes, it's alright for the moment," he added further.
After the washout on day two, the tourists resumed their first innings from 255 and for 2, with both Amla and Kallis in sight for centuries. Both the settled batsmen reached three-digit figures during the morning session, with Amla perishing on 104, a controversial leg before wicket off Peter Siddle.
During his 147-run knock, the experienced batsman shared valuable partnerships with Hashim Amla (165) and AB de Villiers (90).
"I'm happy with the way I played," said the veteran all-rounder who closely missed out on a well-deserved 150 during South Africa’s first-innings in the ongoing first Test of the three-match series. "It was tough this morning. I thought Oz bowled really well and got the ball into good areas," added Kallis.
In reply, the hosts got off to a tumultuous start, losing Warner, Quiney and Ponting for a combined scrore of just 13. Ed Cowan and skipper Michael Clarke led Australia’s fight-back adding unbeaten 71 runs for the fourth-wicket, to take the side to 111 for 3 at stumps.
