Jacques Kallis rested for England ODIs – Cricket News Update
Cricket South Africa has announced the squad for the forthcoming 5-match One Day International series against England, and the name ‘Jacques Kallis’ is missing from the list. This gives a clear indication that he has been rested and is very much in their plan for the coming World T20 Cup.
Kallis who made his T20 debut against New Zealand in 2005, at Johannesburg, has played only one game in this format since the 2010 T20 World Cup in West Indies. He scored 61 runs in his team’s 11-run victory over India, in a match played in his honour in March this year.
His place in the squad has been taken by Orange Free State all-rounder, Dean Elgar, who has played 26 T20s in his carrier so far and scored 573 runs at an average of 35.81. Elgar was selected to play against Sri Lanka earlier this year, but a knee injury prevented him from making his international debut.
"Dean has been in our plans for some time and might well have made his debut last year but for injury," Andrew Hudson, CSA's selection convener said.
However, there were recalls for leg-spinner Imran Tahir and allrounder Ryan McLaren.
Tahir made his ODI debut in the ICC Cricket World Cup, against West Indies, and has so far played 5 games and taken 14 wickets.
On the other hand, the 29-year-old McLaren was out of favour for two years and played the last of his 10 one-dayers in 2010, against Windies, at Port of Spain.
"Imran is a genuine wicket-taking bowler and his selection enables us to explore our options in this area. Ryan has just come off some exceptional form for the South Africa A side and the added depth he provides in the seam bowling department will allow us to rotate players if we feel the need arises," Said Hudson.
The ODI series gets underway in Cardiff on August 24. The final one-dayer will be played on September 5, which will be followed by a 3-match T20 series, which will start on September 8.
South Africa ODI squad: AB de Villiers (capt), Hashim Amla (vice-capt), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe
