Jacques Kallis scores another ton
Despite claims from the curator that the pitch for the third Test at Cape Town between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 will be batting friendly, the surface proved to be a bowler-friendly one.
It was expected that if the weather were cloudy at Newlands, it would make things difficult for the batsmen as the ball would swing and aid the bowler. And that’s exactly how it turned out. South African batsmen struggled against the seam and swing of the
Indian bowlers. The pitch forced the batsmen to be wary, offered great seam movement and swing for the bowlers.
South Africa lost its openers early on, before the first rain interruption. However, it was Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis who provided some stability to the South African side. Amla played the protagonist leaving tempting deliveries and playing only those
that he could strike with ease.
However, Amla could not convert his half century into another ton as he soon departed off a ripping delivery by Zaheer Khan that forced an edge off his bat straight to the fielder.
Kallis then played beautiful cricket as he went on to score his 39th Test century. He is now tied at second place with the Australian Ricky Ponting for the highest number of Test centuries. Leading the charts is the great Indian, Sachin Tendulkar
with 50 Test tons.
Kallis had a phenomenal 2010 where he scored six centuries and two half centuries at an average of almost 80. He also scored the first double century of his career against India. While his bowling prowess might have waned over the years, it is no doubt that
Kallis is one of the finest batsmen South Africa has produced over the years. If there is any all rounder who deserves to be compared to the great Gary Sobers, it is Kallis.
He has now begun the new calendar year in great fashion with yet another century. Let’s hope he continues to score in the same manner.
