Jacques Villeneuve: Williams part of F1, should become racing team rather than business – Formula 1
Former Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has stated that the Williams team should step up to become competitive in the 2011 Formula 1 season just as they used to be.
Jacques added that Williams are one of the few teams who are left on the Formula 1 arena with a legend and hopefully, they will live up to the expectations.
Jacques, who won a Formula 1 world championship with the Williams team, added that Williams are a proper racing team and not just a business venture trying to improve their image in the Formula 1 world.
He stated, “My memory of Williams was that they were in it to race. That was it. It wasn't the circus, it was just everything is done to race, and it was the same with Renault. I think they haven't changed. Also it creates interest, which should help getting
sponsorship.”
Talking about the Williams team and their performance in the 2011 Formula 1 season, Jacques commented, “It is one of the only teams that left that is a legend in Formula 1. That should be part of F1, that is F1, that are a racing team not just a business
trying to make image, where racing becomes something on the side. So I would love for Williams to become competitive again if just for that.”
Williams have had their worst start to a season in ages in 2011 because both of their drivers, Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado, were unable to score a point in the first five races of the season. Although the team has now scored four points, thanks
to Barrichello, still Jacques believes that the team is not as competitive as they used to be in recent years.
Williams have taken a huge step in their management to improve team performance in the 2011 and upcoming seasons. In addition, Williams are looking to boost their engine by shifting to Renault rather than the current Cosworth machine.
