Jacques Villeneuve lashes out at Romain Grosjean - Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve lashed out at Lotus’ Romain Grosjean, saying that the youngster did not learn from his mistakes last year, when he
was involved in numerous first lap incidents.
The 2012 season saw a close competition between all teams and there were seven different winners from the first seven races, which made things quite interesting.
Looking at that, every driver focussed on consistency, as that was the key to being competitive overall.
However, Grosjean ended up with a total of seven retirements, mostly because of his rash driving on the first lap. Not only did he hamper his chances of finishing
in the top five of the drivers’ championship, but his mistakes cost some crucial points to other drivers too.
During the Belgian GP, the French driver qualified in eight position overall and was in a very good position of scoring some decent points, as his car was normally
good in terms of race pace. Despite that, he blew away chances of making an impression and collided on the first lap.
Due to this collision, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was also sent into retirement and he narrowly escaped a serious injury. Had this incident not happened, the Spaniard
could have been the reigning world champion, as he finished just three points behind winner Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull.
Grosjean was banned for one race because of the entire situation and he claimed to have learnt from his mistakes afterwards.
However, Villeneuve said, “His only problem is that he does not learn from his mistakes. I found all of last year’s nonsense amazing. He didn’t change from the
first to the last race. It’s a shame because he is a very fast driver. The only reason he has the chance of winning is because he has an incredible car.”
Commenting on this year’s championship, Villeneuve said, “The best car is certainly Adrian Newey’s Red Bull. But apart from Alonso, there is no driver capable of
driving at the limit of the car the whole race. After him, maybe Lewis Hamilton. He is no longer at McLaren, with his family, and so he is not protected anymore.”
Currently, all teams are present in Barcelona for the final preseason test and they will later head to Australia for the season opener.
