Jacques Villeneuve strikes the 7 time Formula 1 Champion Michael Schumacher
The 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve recently questioned Michael Schumacher’s “motivation” for the 2011 Formula 1 season. This is going to be the German’s second season after his comeback. Michael returned to Formula 1 in 2010 after he retired
in 2007.
Schumacher took a three year break after losing the titles to Fernando Alonso twice in a row in 2005 and 2006 but the German is confident that he will compete for the drivers’ title this time as his team has produced a very reliable and suitable car this
year.
“I followed his return with attention and he is still fit and fast,” Villeneuve, who beat Schumacher to the 1997 title after a close and controversial contest, said.
He added that the fans expected a bit too much from Schumacher after his return, but the 2010 Formula 1 season was quite disappointing for him and his team Mercedes.
Nico Rosberg on the other hand surprised the spectators and beat Michael Schumacher while driving the same car as him. Nico scored almost twice as many points as Michael and finished in 7th place in the drivers’ standings while the 7-time World
Champion finished in 9th place.
“Everyone thought he was going to be a second faster than Nico Rosberg. But when he was at Ferrari he was only a tenth in front of Rubens Barrichello. And over time, in people's minds, a tenth became a second,” said Jacques.
He stated that Michael “smiled” even after bad results during the 2010 Formula 1 season. Villeneuve’s favorite driver for the 2011 Formula 1 season is Fernando Alonso though, as he believes that he is a “Spanish bull”.
“He is a Spanish bull, nothing can stop him. He always gets the best out of each situation and has shown he can win with an average car and bring a team forward all by himself,” he laughed.
It would be interesting to see how the top running teams perform at the season opening race of the 2011 Formula 1 season which is expected to take place in Australia on the 27th of March.
