Jade Neilsen captures Women’s 200m freestyle gold: Day one – 2011 Australian University Games
Jade Neilsen of Bond University captured gold medal of Women’s 200m freestyle on the foremost day of the 2011 Australian University Games. The session completed on Tuesday, September 27, at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre in Queensland.
Neilsen became evident for gold medal of the freestyle discipline from the start of the race and cruised her way to the finishing wall throughout the four-lap swim, by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 03.46 seconds. With her magnificent swim, she remained
just 0.43 seconds away from the Games record of 2 minutes and 03.03 seconds
The gold medallist was followed by Madeleine Van Hunnik of QLD University of Technology, who remained almost four seconds slower than her and reached the podium for silver medal, by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 07.21 seconds. Van Hunnik was in a lead
of 0.16 seconds over Jessica Morrison of University of Melbourne, as she appeared on the podium for bronze medal, by producing a time of 2 minutes and 07.37 seconds.
Meanwhile, Hunnik’s team-member, Rebecca Harry surfaced on the finishing wall as fourth position holder. Harry remained nearly one second behind her preceding swimmer and touched the finishing wall in a time of 2 minutes and 08.45 seconds. She was trailed
by Mel Houghton of University of Sydney, who completed her four-lap sprint in 2 minutes and 10.71 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth spot of the race was secured by Rebecca Pegg of University of Queensland, as she completed her swim in 2 minutes and 11.96 seconds. In the meantime, Morrison’s team-mate, Nicolette Lyttle ended her swim in the seventh place as she clocked a time of
2 minutes and 12.13 seconds. Lyttle was chased by Samantha Bennett of Monash University, who ended up eighth with an effort of 2 minutes and 20.04 seconds.
The arena enjoyed the gruelling efforts of all national swimmers who competed with each other in a wonderful manner. Furthermore, winners were invited on the victory stand for their phenomenal efforts after the session’s completion.
