Jadson Andre and Heitor Alves survive Round 2 of Hurley Pro – 2011 ASP World Tour
The fans kept getting treated to a heavy dose of surfing action at Lower Trestles in California, America, with the ninth and tenth heat of Hurley Pro’s Round 1 on Monday, September 19.
Brazil’s Jadson Andre pulled off a set of really exquisite combos during the ninth heat to take down Hawaii’s Dusty Payne and secure a place in Round 3, eliminating his rival from the competition in the process.
The 10th heat saw Brazil’s Heitor Alves survive an intense battle against his compatriot, Miguel Pupo, to make his way into the third round while removing his opponent from the contention for the event-title.
The 21-year-old Andre may not have been the most impressive surfer during the first round of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour event, but he surely stole the show on the second day with his outstanding performance during the
ninth heat of Round 2.
Competing against the dangerous Payne for survival, the Brazilian got off to a slow start but slowly built momentum to eventually lock a left-hander and pull off a powerful fore-hand carve, followed by an inverted air-reverse, to collect 9.43 points. Not
quite done yet, he immediately followed it up with another impressive wave and added an additional 8.37 points to his account to take the win.
Talking to a reporter after the heat, Andre said, “The last few years I’ve been working on my carves and the waves I learned how to surf on, the only thing you can do is big airs on the beach breaks. It’s the first thing I learned how to do and I know how
to do them well. When the wind’s onshore like that it’s way easier to do airs, I saw Gabriel [Medina] do the same.”
Payne was unable to come up with an adequate response to his rival’s late charge and had no choice but to embrace defeat after finishing with a heat-total of 13.10 points, which included a 6.17 and 6.93-point wave.
The 10th heat pitted the 29-year-old Alves against Pupo, with both the Brazilians in dire need of the win to remain alive in the event.
As the heat commenced, Pupo took the lead by locking a wave halfway through the heat to score 7.50 points. Alves took his time to search for a decent response and eventually came up with one in the later stages, when he earned 7.00 points off his first business-wave.
Pupo caught a wave in the final minutes of the heat to collect 7.30 points and move to a heat-total of 14.80 points. It seemed that the fate of the heat had been sealed in his favour, when suddenly Alves made a desperate effect on his last wave and managed
to score 7.87 points off it to move 0.04 points ahead of his rival on the scoreboard, consequently getting his hands on victory.
