Jadson Andre and Jesse Mendes through to next round: First round of Super Surf International – Part 1
The first round of Super Surf International, the round of 96, continued at the beach-break of Praia da Vila in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on Tuesday, May 30th.
The first round was featuring 96 professional surfers in 24 heats. Each heat pitted four surfers against each other, with the first and second finishers advancing to the next stage of the competition, the round of 48, while the bottom two surfers would have
their names added to the elimination list.
While the residents of Santa Catarina were disappointed because of not being provided with an opportunity to play host to an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour event this year, they still got a chance to play host to talented surfers from
all across the globe, along with a large number of local surfing talent.
The surfing conditions at the event site turned out to be pretty demanding on Tuesday. Even though there were decent four-to-six foot waves on offer at Praia da Vila, the offshore winds made it challenging for the surfers to surf them and perform their desired
tricks.
More than half the field of Super Surf International was comprised of the same surfers who had competed at Saquarema Surf Pro International in challenging conditions at the beach-break of Itauna, in Rio de Janeiro just a few days back. Unfortunately for
then, Santa Catarina did not turn out to be in their favour either, pushing them into yet another series of challenges.
Brazil’s Jadson Andre kicked off the proceeding at Praia da Vila on Tuesday in the first heat and managed to walk away with victory, while Australia’s Adam Robertson finished in second place to qualify for the next round as well. Australia’s Heath Joske
and Brazil’s Odirlei Coutinho failed to make a strong impact in the heat and found themselves in the elimination list after rounding off the bottom two positions.
In the second heat, the victory was snatched by yet another Brazilian surfer, Jesse Mendes, leaving his compatriot, Yuri Sodre to finish in second place. Finishing in the top two positions, both Mendes and Sodre find themselves qualified for the next round
of the competition. Ireland’s Glenn Hall and Brazil’s Messias Felix finished in third and fourth place respectively and no longer remain in contention for the event title.
