Jadson Andre and Raoni Monteiro still alive in Saquarema Pro International after round of 48
The third heat of Saquarema Pro International’s round of 48 concluded at the beach-break of Itauna in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday afternoon, May 26th.
Brazil’s Jadson Andre remained the highlight of the heat with his exceptional performance, finishing in first place. His compatriot Raoni Monteiro put up a determined fight to keep Andre from taking the win, but eventually had to settle for second place.
Australia’s Matt Wilkinson and Brazil’s Leandro Bastos failed to match the outstanding performances of their rivals and ended up in third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The conditions at the primary event site were nothing short of a surfer’s nightmare. The surfers were not only competing against each other, they were also battling against mother-nature, who for some reason was bent upon ruining the reputation of Brazil
as one of the best surfing spots in the world.
Refusing to succumb to the many challenges thrown at him by mother-nature, Brazil’s Andre went on a complete rampage, giving an extraordinary performance that almost complemented his performance in the first round on Wednesday. He earned a staggering single-wave
score of 9.27 in one of his two waves to finish the heat with a final score of 16.77.
Even though the effort allowed him to walk away victorious, Andre did not seem too happy with the conditions at Itauna. Talking to a reporter, he said, “It’s not easy out there and it’s not that fun when the waves are like this. It´s even tougher here in
Itauna because it’s a point break and everybody's fighting for the same waves.”
Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro continued to look impressive in the second round and would've walked away with the win had it not been for Andre’s sensational first wave score. He had to settle for a runner-up position with his two-wave score of 15.50. However,
the end result will definitely not disappoint him as the second-place finish was enough for him to qualify for round of 24 along with Andre.
Wilkinson and Bastos did not look too comfortable in the sea, struggling to catch good waves and giving off slightly shaky performances. This resulted in them earning 12.13 and 10.20 after their two waves respectively. They both find themselves eliminated
from the event title race.
Hopefully, the surf conditions will improve as the competition progresses, as the surfing fans are anxious to see exciting surfing at Itauna beach.
