Jadson Andre captures victory in Round 1 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
Brazil’s Jadson Andre got to walk away with top honours after prevailing over Australia’s Owen Wright and USA’s Bobby Martinez in the fourth heat of Round 1 at Quiksilver Pro New York, the sixth stop of 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World
Tour, at Long Beach in New York on Tuesday, September 6.
The outcome of the match-up allowed Andre to move directly to Round 3, while relegating Wright and Martinez, who finished in second and third position respectively, to Round 2.
Despite the two-to-four foot waves on offer at the event site, it was turning out to be a real challenging day for surfers as they struggled to get their hands on good waves. The scarcity of promising waves contributed to the intensity of the battles, while
keeping them rather low-scoring.
The fourth heat featured yet another intense but low-scoring contest. As the battle commenced, the 21-year-old Andre immediately locked a wave to exhibit some of the stylish tricks in his arsenal, earning 6.67 points for the effort and clinching the lead.
He soon added another 5.10 points to his account to take his heat-total to 11.77 points. With the world’s best surfers serving as rivals, the score was hardly comforting, but it surprisingly proved to be enough to earn the Brazilian victory and a place in
the third round.
Wright had stunned everyone with his exceptional and consistent performance at the recently concluded Billabong Pro Tahiti, which led to high expectations from him at the latest stop of the ASP World Tour as well. However, he failed to live up to these expectations
and apparently struggled to find his rhythm as he surfed the waves off Long Beach. Collecting a 3.33-point wave early in the heat, Wright made a charge in the final minutes to add an additional 6.67 points to his account, but it proved to be insufficient.
Consequently, he had to settle for runner-up place which led to his relegation to Round 2.
Despite the local knowledge of the waves, Martinez remained quite disappointing during the 30-minute Round 1 heat. He eventually finished with a heat-total of 7.10 points, which comprised of a 4.00 and 3.10-point wave. As a result, he found himself relegated
to the second round as well.
While things may not have started ideally for Wright and Martinez, both the surfers still have a chance of remaining in contention for the event-title by making no mistake in Round 2.
