Jadson Andre defeats Adriano de Souza in Round 5 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
With the conclusion of Round 4, half the field for the quarter-finals of Quiksilver Pro New York was decided. In order to determine the remaining four quarter-finalists, the fifth round of the competition got underway with the first heat on Thursday, September
8, at Long Beach, New York.
The first heat saw Brazil’s Jadson Andre walk away with top honours after surviving an intense battle against his compatriot, Adriano De Souza. The outcome of the battle sent the former into the quarter-finals, while removing the latter from the competition.
Both Andre and De Souza had shown impressive performances at the latest stop of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour so far. However, a weak performance in Round 4 had led them to fight for survival in the relegation Round 5, putting
both under immense pressure, knowing the failure to clinch victory would lead to elimination.
With six-foot waves and strong winds prevailing at the primary event site, the opening heat of Round 5 got underway. De Souza got off to a relatively decent start, locking a wave early in the battle to score 5.50 points off it and taking the lead. Continuing
the charge, he soon caught another wave to pull off a string of impressive manoeuvres, adding an additional 7.43 points to his account. The two waves carried him to a heat-total of 12.93 points, allowing him to place his opponent under pressure.
The 21-year-old Andre got off to a slow start and found it difficult to make the most of the waves that came his way. However, his determination to get rid of the pressure that his opponent had placed him under eventually paid off and he broke free of the
shackles by locking a wave to score 6.93 points off it. After another patient hunt, he managed to catch another wave and this time added an additional 6.67 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 13.60 points. The 0.67 lead over De Souza earned him
the top honours, allowing him to successfully clinch the quarter-final spot.
Despite looking promising, De Souza had once again failed to find his place in the quarter-finals. It seemed that he was still lacking the rhythm that had allowed him to become one of the most prominent surfers in the early stages of the 2011 ASP World Tour.
With his victory in Round 5, Andre advanced to the next stage of the competition, where he would compete against Australia’s Taj Burrow in a battle for the semi-final slot.
