Jadson Andre defeats Damien Hobgood in Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The latest stop of 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro New York, continued to treat the fans to intense action featuring the top surfers from all around the globe with the fourth heat of Round 3 that went down at the
Long Beach, New York, on Wednesday afternoon, September 7.
The fourth heat saw Brazil’s Jadson Andre clinch a comfortable win over America’s Damien Hobgood to continue his title campaign by advancing to the fourth round, consequently bringing the current elite tour event to a premature end for his opponent.
The 21-year-old Andre was proving to be quite a force at Long Beach so far. On the opening day of the competition, the Brazilian force had done exceptionally well to survive his heat against Australia’s in-form Owen Wright and America’s Bobby Martinez to
earn his place in the third round. Confident from the ideal start to the competition, Andre got ready to face his latest challenge, Hobgood.
Hobgood had barely missed out on victory in the first heat, which had led to his relegation to Round 2. However, he managed to bounce back in the second round to make his way into Round 3 to face an in-form Andre.
As the fourth heat kicked off, Andre took his time to adjust to the surfing conditions, which involved four-to-six foot wave sand strong winds, before going for the more technical tricks in his arsenal. Almost halfway through the heat, he locked a wave to
pull off a string of exquisite manoeuvres, earning 7.67 points for the effort. In the final minutes of the heat, he caught another wave to add an additional 5.77 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 13.44 points.
Despite possessing the local knowledge of the waves and the crowd’s support behind him, Hobgood failed to make an impact during the 30-minute heat due to his poor wave selection. He also failed to adjust to the conditions, which were pretty demanding and
in turn led to a disappointing performance by him.
His best scores came from a couple of waves that he locked early in the heat, earning 3.00 points off the first one and 4.93 points off the second to finish with a heat-total of 7.93 points. The 5.51-point deficit forced him to surrender victory to Andre,
sending the Brazilian to the fourth round while getting eliminated from the competition himself.
With the conclusion of the fourth heat, the event organisers called it a day due to fading light. The competition was scheduled to resume on Thursday with the fifth heat of Round 3.
