Jae Crowder stars as Marquette Golden Eagles run over Jacksonville Dolphins 88-56: NCAA Basketball
Jae Crowder erupted with a season-high 27 points as Marquette Golden Eagles romped to a 88-56 victory over Jacksonville Dolphins on November 28, 2011 at the Bradley Center, Milwaukee. It was sixth straight victory for the Golden
Eagles who improved to their second 6-0 start in the last three seasons. On the other hand, it was second consecutive loss for the Dolphins who dropped to 2-4.
Crowder, who is averaging 17.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game so far this season, ended on 9 for 15 shooting from the field, including 4 for 7 from three-point range and 5 for 8 from free throw line. Darius Johnson-Odom was also
brilliant, adding 19 points on 3 for 5 shooting from downtown, five rebounds and four assists. Todd Mayo also came off the bench with a career-high 14 points on 4 for 6 shooting from the floor.
Delwan Graham led the Dolphins with 13 points and six rebounds while Chris Davis had 12 points on 4 for 5 shooting from downtown. Tevin Galvin posted 10 points while Russell Powell dished out 10 assists for Jacksonville, who lost
107-62 to Florida on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles continued to impress with 58.5 percent shooting from the floor, including 56.3 percent from downtown and 58.6 percent from charity strip. The Dolphins, meanwhile, ended on 34.4 percent shooting, including 6 for
14 from three-point range in the first half to keep the game close. However, Marquette limited them to just 3 for 12 in the second half of the game.
"Sixty percent of their points in the first half came from 3’s," Marquette head coach Buzz Williams said. "That is not a good combination. I thought we were a lot better in the second half."
Johnson-Odom, the Paradise Jam's MVP, scored five of his points early in the first half as the Golden Eagles held a seven-point lead, 14-7. The Dolphins immediately reeled off a 12-5 run and jumped on a 20-19 lead with 8:43 to
go. Johnson-Odom started to pull away late in the first half- scoring six consecutive points in the last 48 seconds – as Marquette carried a 37-28 lead into the second.
Jae Crowder took over the second half as he racked up 14 of his points within the first seven minutes to push Marquette’s lead to 13-point, 45-32. Delwan Graham then made a jumper and a free throw to cut the margin to ten. However,
the Golden Eagles tallied the next eight points, capped by consecutive threes from Crowder to make it 53-35 with 14:30 remaining. The Dolphins did not get any closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
