Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey says Tim Tebow interest was collective choice, not just owner’s-NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach, Mike Mularkey, has stepped forward to clarify the situation around the prospects of signing former Denver Broncos’ quarterback, Tim Tebow, insisting that he was as much ambitious to sign the player as the owner, Shahid Khan.
A couple of media reports linked Shahid Khan to the interests for Tebow’s bringing to Jacksonville, where had grown up.
Some media analysts claimed that it was only the owner who wanted to explore the opportunity to sign the quarterback.
They said that Jaguars’ coach, Mularkey, and general manager, Gene Smith, did not wish to seek inclusion of the player to their squad.
Some of the commentators claim that the owner had directed the general manager to explore the options of signing Tebow.
However, the head coach came to the rescue of the owner, and said on Thursday, March 22, 2012, that he himself wanted to sign the player more than anyone else.
Mularkey said:
"Don't believe everything you hear or read in the media. It's hard not to want a guy like that."
Furthermore, he denied that the front office of the team was not interested in signing the player. He said anyone would be interested in acquiring the player like Tebow so there was no question of an objection from any of the front office officials.
In any case, Tebow has opted to join the New York Jets, and the deal is almost done except for some minor regulatory challenges.
Jaguars were reported to have offered the fourth-round pick in trade for Tebow. Some commentators wrote that the offer did not suit the calibre of Tim Tebow. They said that the team should have offered a third-round pick at least if they were interested
in signing of the player.
Mularkey, while commenting on the equation, said that the exact offer in exchange for Tebow was a matter of confidentially and declined to highlight any aspect of the choice.
Had Tebow moved to Jaguars, he certainly could have come as a great development for the team, who currently are relying on rookie, Blaine Gabbert.
The general manager, Gene Smith, has also been reported separately to be interested in the player. In spite of the talk and all those developments, it is not ascertained if any official from Jaguars front office approached management of Broncos to formally
express their interest in singing the player.
Since the start of the free agency, Jaguars have signed a couple of players off the market. They, however, have remained content with Blaine at the starting position.
