Jaime Alguersuari believes Sebastian Vettel has more to lose than Fernando Alonso – Formula 1 news
Former Toro Rosso driver, Jaime Alguersuari believes that Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing has more to lose in the championship battle as compared to his main rival, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
Vettel is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 255 points and has a lead of 10 points over Alonso who had been on top of the standings for quite a long time in this season.
Even though, the veteran German driver faced issues during the start of the season as the Milton Keynes based team struggled with their car’s design because of the changes in rules and regulations by FIA. Nevertheless, he has performed tremendously well
in the last few grands prix and has become the strongest title contender because of his competent car.
On the other hand, the Spaniard has lost some crucial points because of his unfortunate retirements in two races, but has performed quite convincingly in the season so far and is very much in the title fight.
However, Alguersuari thinks that the defending champion has a competitive edge over the 31-year-old in this year’s championship fight because of his quicker car.
Nonetheless, he said that the driver of the Scarlet team still has a chance to win the title and he will fight for it hard in the remaining two races of the season.
“Alonso is 10 points behind Vettel in the championship going into the final two races of the season, which is a really small amount - the same as a fifth-place finish,” he wrote in his column for the BBC.
“Alonso knows he has to keep on playing his cards, doing his maximum and pressuring Vettel as best he can,” he said.
“But one thing is sure - Vettel has more to lose than Alonso. He is leading and he has a quicker car. Vettel shouldn't lose it, but he could. All Alonso can do is win, because it already looks like he shouldn't,” he added.
It will be interesting to see how the top two drivers perform in the last two rounds of the ongoing season and who claims the title in the end.
