Jaime Garcia’s economical pitches help St. Louis Cardinals defeat Chicago Cubs, 9-1: MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter, Jaime Garcia, had a remarkable day as he threw seven solid innings with four strike-outs in the Cardinals’ 9-1 victory against the Chicago Cubs at the Wrigley Field in Chicago on May 12.
Garcia allowed just one run on nine hits with one earned run. He gave one walk to the Cubs’ batters. Garcia was happy with his performance as he said, “Sometimes you're going to throw really good and sometimes, like today, you won't have your best stuff. But if you battle, that's what it's all about.”
The first inning passed away without a score for both the teams. The Cardinals’ batters did pretty well in the second inning as they added five runs for their team. Matt Holliday initiated the scoring account for the Cardinals by hitting one-run homer off the left-field position. Garcia also shined with the bat as he hit an RBI single, while Allen Craig made a single run on the sacrifice fly of Albert Pujols, who went 1-for-5 with the bat.
Jon Jay drove a shot for two-run double and scored two runs to take the lead 5-0 at the end of second inning. The score-card remained unmoved during the third and fourth inning because the pitchers threw in good line and length. The Cardinals got a 6-0 lead in the fifth inning when Colby Rasmus took a single towards the right-centre field spot. On the other side, the Cubs remained scoreless till the fifth inning.
The Cubs’ posted their first run when Starlin Castro drove a ball on the left field against Garcia and Marlon Byrd completed his single by running off the second base. The Cubs lessened their trail to 6-1 at the end of sixth inning. The game turned the other way round during seventh inning when the Cardinals extended their lead to 9-1 by adding three runs. Yadier Molina doubled while Rasmus reached at the third base for one run.
The Cubs’ Manager, Mike Quade, was frustrated with the poor feedback of batters. During press conference, he said, “When you lose two top-notch starters, it's not an easy gap to fill. We'll get through this, we'll get those guys and back and be fine. ... He [Coleman] just didn't have a very good day today.”
Casey Coleman showed the worst performance with his pitches. He permitted six runs on nine hits including six earned runs with four walks in just 4 1/2 innings pitched. Coleman was unable to strike-out any batter. The relievers also did not pitch well for their team as John Grabow and Justin Berg both pitched 2 3/4 innings jointly and gave away three runs on seven hits.
Carlos Marmol was the only man who pitched superbly as he struck-out three batters in only one inning pitched.
