Jair Jurrjens’ pitching helps Atlanta Braves defeat Cincinnati Reds, 2-1 – MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ starter, Jair Jurrjens outclassed the batters by pitching eight solid innings with an ERA of 1.51 in the Braves’ 2-1 victory against the Cincinnati Reds at Turner Field, Atlanta on May 29.
Jurrjens allowed just one run on six hits including one earned run. He had five strike-outs and permitted two walks on 98 pitches. Jurrjens was excited after winning the game as he said, “It's a bang-bang play. I can't say a lot about that. I'm just happy
it went our way.”
The Braves’ Manager, Fredi Gonzalez had a huge ovation for Jurrjens. Speaking to reporters, he said, “J.J. gave us everything he had. It was a good ballgame, good old-fashioned pitching.”
The first inning passed without any run for both sides. The Reds initiated their scoring in the second inning and got a 1-0 lead when Jay Bruce hit a home-run (456 feet) towards the right centre-field. Third to fifth inning was score-less as no batter was
able to put a run on the score-board due to impressive throwing of the pitchers.
Paul Janish also failed to score a run for the Reds as he went 2-for-3. He flew out to left-field in the fifth inning. He commented on his performance and said, “I looked at the replay and upon review, I didn't realize the ball beat me by quite so much.
So from the umpire's perspective, I can understand why it was such a close call. It was just a tough play and it happened so fast.”
During the sixth inning, Martin Prado struck a solo homer (392 feet) to left-field and tied the game. However, Jordan Schafer scored a tie-breaking run at the bottom of the sixth to give the go-ahead for the Braves 2-1. The last three innings also went score-less
for both sides as the pitchers threw the ball in perfect line. Prado said, “The first thing that crossed my mind was I don't want to play extra innings again.”
The Reds’ starter, Johnny Cueto also pitched well but it was not a game winning performance. He threw eight innings with an ERA of 2.20 and permitted two runs on five hits with two earned runs. Cueto gave away three walks on 116 pitches and struck-out five
batters.
