Jair Jurrjens’ shut-out innings help Atlanta Braves defeat Baltimore Orioles 4-0 – MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ starter, Jair Jurrjens showed an amazing performance as he threw his career’s first shut-out innings with an ERA of 1.89 and gave the Braves a 4-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Turner Field, Atlanta on July 1.
In the first five innings of the game, the pitchers were on top as they did not allow any batter to play scoring shots. J. J. Hardy was struck-out swinging and Nick Markakis grounded out towards first base at the top of the first inning. The Braves’ batters
also struggled as Brian McCann walked but Jordan Schafer was struck-out swinging and Chipper Jones got out at second base at the bottom of the first inning.
The Orioles’ batters missed some runs at the top of the fourth inning as Adam Jones flied out to left-field. On the other side, Dan Uggla was struck-out and Alex Gonzalez lined out to the pitcher at the end of the fifth inning. During the sixth inning, the
Braves’ offence got off the mark by posting two runs and got a 2-0 lead.
Jason Heyward struck a solo homer (429 feet) towards centre-field and Schafer posted one run to finish the two-run campaign at the bottom of the sixth inning. The batters again failed and got out in the seventh inning without scoring any run. Jones stole
second base at the top of the seventh but Derrek Lee was struck-out swinging.
Jurrjens allowed only one hit without any run in his nine inning pitches. He was able to strike-out eight batters and permitted one walk on 112 pitches. The Braves’ manager, Fredi Gonzalez was content with the efforts of Jurrjens and said, “That was a pretty
good performance that maybe will get some people's attention, at least be on the team.”
During the eighth inning, Schafer scored his second run of the game when Jones singled towards left-field. The second and last run was taken by Heyward when the Orioles’ first baseman, Lee committed a throwing error. The score-board advanced to 4-0 after
the eighth inning.
In the ninth inning, Vladimir Guerrero was struck-out and Markakis flied out towards left-field without providing any runs. With this comfortable victory, the Braves led off 1-0 in a three-game series at Atlanta.
