Jair Jurrjens’ strike-outs help the Atlanta Braves sweep New York Mets 4-0 – MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ starter Jair Jurrjens pitched seven dominated innings and struck out four batters as the Braves defeated the New York Mets 4-0 at Turner Field, Atlanta, on 16 April.
Jurrjens expressed his excitement and said, “It's a good feeling being able to help your team. It's exciting being back out there. It's fun, and I hope it continues the rest of the season.”
Jair pitched against 15 batters right through his five innings, allowing one walk with two hits and struck-out seven hitters. He recovered from a right oblique injury and proved his spot in the team with an amazing performance. It was expected that he would
return after a long time, but he become healthy and available to play a few days ago.
Jurrjens was considered as the top starting pitcher for the Braves during 2008 and 2009 due to his impressive Win-Loss record of 27-20. During 2010, Jurrjens ended the Major League Baseball season on the disabled list with a knee injury, as the oblique strain
occurred in Spring Training during this year.
The two relievers George Sherrill and Scott Linebrink also threw well and did not allow a run with two and three strike-outs, respectively. Alex Gonzalez struck two out of four homers for the Braves. Martin Prado posted two runs on the scoreboard by hitting
two pitches.
The Mets had their worst Win-Loss record in the franchise history, as they have lost most of the games in their schedule. During the current season, the Braves managed to brush the Mets aside in the double-header.
The Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey pitched five innings and gave up just four runs on 11 hits, including three strike-outs. Dan Uggla made a single run in the first inning off Pelfrey while Chipper Jones struck a RBI single in the third inning and also struck
a home-run in the first game. Jones had an impressive play-off against the Mets, as he had batting average of .319 against them. He struck 45 home-runs off the Mets during his baseball career.
After the Jurrjens injury, Daniel Murphy took a lead in the sixth inning by scoring a double. Murphy was out on a throw by Davis Ross while stealing a third base. Speaking to reporters, Murphy said, “It was an awful play. There was nothing that could have
been going through my mind that would have justified that. I'm not going to score three runs by myself. I killed [the inning].”
Willie Harris completed his run with Carlos Beltran by taking a double against Derek Lowe in the sixth inning. He then made a single, but was caught out to wrap-up the inning. Josh Thole contributed for his team by making one run in the fifth inning.
