Jairo Alonso Salas wins 10th stage as Sergio Luis Henao takes overall lead in 2011 Vuelta a Colombia
GW Shimano-Chec-Edeq-Envia team’s Jairo Alonso Salas won the tenth stage of 2011 Vuelta a Colombia on Thursday, June 23. Sergio Luis Henao took the overall leader’s jersey.
The race started in Bucaramanga and ended in Barrancabermeja. The 27-year-old Jairo took a total of 4 hours, 5 minutes and 57 seconds to cover the distance of 205 kilometres.
After winning the stage, Jairo said, "I felt very tired yesterday, the effort in this round has been much, but I am very happy to win the stage here in Barrancabermeja. Well I went in search of it, when he was attacked and thank god he can win the package
to Castaneda.”
Previously, Jairo won the 13th stage of Vuelta a Guatemala and took the fifth stage of National Classic Marco Fidel Suarez, Bello. He also took the first stage of Classic Marinilla.
Jaime Castaneda of Epm-Une was the runner-up and Marlon Perez of GW Shimano-Chec-Edeq-Envia was in the third spot.
The ninth stage winner, Oscar Sevilla, was in a good form, but unable to maintain his lead and grabbed the 13th spot ahead of Camilo Castiblanco and Mario Rojas.
A group of four riders made their first breakaway including, which included Jefferson Vargas (Redetrans-Supergiros-Indervalle-Emcali), Fabio Montenegro (Formesan-Panachi-Indersantander-Essa), Frank Osorio (GW Shimano-Chec-Edeq-Envia) and Julian Rodas (Gobernacion
De Antioquia-Indeportes Antioquia).
All of them gained a lead of few seconds over the peloton, but Jefferson increased his pace and won the first two sprint of the stage. In the final sprint, a group of seven riders which included, Miguel Nino, Chalapud Robinson and Jefferson gained a lead
of 4 minutes and 10 seconds over the peloton.
Jefferson won the third sprint, while Jairo Salas maintained his pace and took the stage victory ahead of other riders.
Edgar Alonso Fonseca took the first mountain of the stage, ahead of Walter Pedraza and Mauricio Neiza.
Sergio Luis Henao took the overall lead with the timing of 39 hours, 11 minutes and 4 seconds. Walter Pedraza was the runner-up with 1 minute and Felix Rafael finished third with 9 seconds behind Sergio.
The next stage will start in Barrancabermeja and end in Puerto Boyacá. All the riders will cover the distance of 189 kilometres.
