Jake Arrieta ineffective as Baltimore Orioles were beaten by Philadelphia Phillies 6-9 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were beaten by Philadelphia Phillies 6-9 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, June 8 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Orioles’ starting pitcher Jake Arrieta had one of the worst nights of his career as he gave up nine runs and eleven hits in just four innings to lose his sixth straight decision.
"Going over the game in my head and trying to analyze things. I'm probably overthinking things," he said. "I'm just kind of lost right now.
After taking a humiliating loss at the hands of the Phillies on Friday evening, the Orioles have now moved to third place at American League East Division standings. Buck Showalter and company are just one game behind the leaders Tampa Bay Rays and it will
be interesting to see if they can bounce back in the next two games of this series to grab the first spot on the league standings.
Philadelphia, on the other hand, will be very pleased with the fact they were able to beat one of the strongest teams of MLB this season. With their win on Friday evening, the improved their 29-31 and it will be exciting to see if they can work out the weaker
links in their game play to earn a rare series sweep at Oriole Park.
The Phillies made an extremely aggressive start to the contest. Taking complete advantage of Baltimore’s unforced errors on the field, they raced to an impassable lead in the seventh inning. Chris Davis scored the first run for the Orioles in the second
inning with a single to left centre.
Robert Andino drove in an RBI double to left to reduce Phillies’ lead to 7-3. Shane Victorino homered to right in the fourth to extend Phillies lead to 9-3. Victorino drove in five runs to help his team break their six game losing streak.
David and J.J. Hardy homered for the Orioles in closing stages of the game but the effort did not prove to be enough as the Orioles lost for the ninth time in 12 games.
