Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum to start next season on PUP list: New York Giants’ GM, Jerry Reese
New York Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, is expecting the team’s tight ends, Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum, to start the next National Football League (NFL) season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
While discussing Giants’ offseason plans with media on Thursday, February 9, 2012, Reese refrained from telling the current status of both the players and said that a clear picture could be given after their surgeries.
He said:
“We’ll just see how they are health-wise after the surgeries and see how quickly they can get back.”
He added that:
“I’m not a doctor, but from perspective, right now they’re both probably guys that will end up on PUP at the beginning of the season and see how healthy they are and how quickly they can recover from these injuries that they have.”
During the Super Bowl XLVI game against New England Patriots on Sunday, February 5, at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Ballard and Beckum were forced to leave the field owing to a torn ACL.
Beckum was injured in the first half of the game while Ballard went out in the second.
After the injuries of both these players, Bear Pascoe was the only tight end left for Giants on the field and he did not disappoint.
A day after the victory, he reflected on the game and said that the injury brought some unforeseen circumstances. However, he said that he was confident enough to handle the pressure.
He commented about the game that:
“There were no butterflies. I was very confident in what I had to get done. So I was ready to go.”
Bear filled the void quite nicely, but he certainly cannot do it all alone.
Reese should hunt new talent and it can be expected that the management would select a new tight end in the upcoming NFL Drafts.
When asked about what his plans regarding giving contract extensions to different players are, Reese said that it was still too early to tell who would stay with the franchise next year.
He informed that the coaches are submitting reviews on the players and a final decision would be made keeping the interest of the franchise in the mind.
