Jake Delhomme misses Thursday’s practise
Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Jake Delhomme missed his second straight practise today following a right ankle injury. Those who hoped Delhomme would return for this Sunday’s game are beginning to fear the worst.
Delhomme had an MRI on Tuesday but he did not reveal the nature of the injury. Neither did coach Eric Mangini who, when asked about the results told reporters, “I’m a big believer in what’s said in the training room, stays in the training room.”
When pressed about Delhomme’s recovery and return, coach Eric Mangini remained cryptic. Mangini said, “I think Jake’s made some progress. We have a couple different approaches how the game can go and we’ll just see which way it goes.” This tight lipped response
does very little to alleviate fan distress. Coach Mangini did however say that Mangini could start, be backup or Cleveland’s number-three emergency quarterback. “All three are potential situations. I couldn’t tell you now where it’s going to go.”
Analysts speculate the Browns could be waiting until game time on Sunday before making any final decisions about their star quarterback.
To add insult to injury, Delhomme was spotted wearing a walking boot at today’s practise; he was standing on the sidelines.
The injury was suffered during Sunday’s opening game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Browns conceded a 17-14 loss. Delhomme was injured in the closing moments of the first half of the match while throwing a game changing interception.
Should Delhomme be unable to play, backup Seneca Wallace will be making his 15th career start. Wallace is a career number-two quarterback, but he was seen doing all the work for Cleveland’s first team squad during practises on Wednesday.
The Cleveland Browns will be going up against the Kansas City Chiefs in their first home game of the season this Sunday.
