Jake Fox dominates as Baltimore Orioles defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 13-3 – MLB Update
Jake Fox put in a brilliant performance adding two homers as Baltimore Orioles beat Pittsburgh Pirates 13-3 in their Grapefruit League game at McKechnie Field in Florida on Thursday, March 17.
Right-handed utility player Fox, who is striving hard to make his name permanent the final roster, has became the best prospect after a tremendous six runs including two grand slams. He launched the first one off Pirates’ starter Ross Ohlendorf, who consumed
six runs in three innings and the second one off Scott Olsen, who allowed three runs on three hits in just over one innings Fox capped a .356 averages in 16 games this spring.
The 28-year-old player is able to play as catcher, baseman and fielder. He will probably substitute if injured Derek Lee does not recover before the regular season. Fox admitted the fact that he remained a bench player if he did not display his skills in
the spring games.
Fox acknowledged a possible place citing Buck. "He knows I want to play every day, but right now, I know that's not where I fit in with this team," Fox said. "I'm going to be a role player, and Buck knows I'm going to do that to the best of my ability. But,
hopefully, I'm showing him I can play every day somewhere down the road."
"I'm trying to leave no doubt that I should be a daily part of this team," Fox said. "Coming into spring training, that's the biggest thing I wanted to prove. I know what I am capable of doing, but I do not think they do. I want to show them exactly what
I can bring to this lineup. From there, it's out of my control."
The Pirates were out of form as they failed on their home field both in bats and in pitches. Pirates’ hurlers except Daniel McCutchen and Michael Dubee’s scoreless tosses, all throwers permitted runs usually on more than two hits. Ohlendorf was on the field
for his fourth start. He was 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in his first three outings. It was his third-straight subdue for the Pirates as they have lost 5-3 to the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Baltimore put in a decent performance as they managed to restrain the Pirates’ offence and prevent them from getting any massive hits.
Pirates will play against Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater with full confidence to take revenge of their previous outing. On March 12, the Phillies were defeated by a wide 4-11 margin. Buck has scheduled Brad Lincoln to start against Philadelphia’s Ross
Oswalt. Chris Resop, Jose Veros, Mike Crotta and Chris Leroux will stand behind and provide support to the starting rotation.
