Jake Higginbottom wins the Keperra Bowl of Golf New Zealand
Jake Higginbottom continued with his winning spree and posted his second consecutive victory at the Keperra Bowl at the Keperra Golf and Country Club.
Higginbottom, who was also the overnight leader, and had led the previous round as well, did everything right to keep his momentum going till the last hole. He scored two-under, 70 for the day, finishing the tournament with 15-under, 273.
"I've been playing consistently for the last few weeks and it is a great way to finish the week," Higginbottom said. "I was unaware of the other player's scores during the round. I didn't even notice the leader board after the front nine and just worried
about my own game."
Higginbottom, who had landed in the final with a lead of three shots, pulled in three birdies and an eagle. The 17-year-old young gun is coming out of last week’s Queensland Amateur at Arundel Hills Golf Club, where he defeated Tim Hart with a convincing
score. This was his second consecutive win for the season and his composure against sturdy amateur players like Matt Steiger speaks volume of his current form.
Steiger, who had not fared well in the opening rounds, jumped into contention later when he carded the best scores of the day; a five-under, 67 in round three. He finished in the second spot with another dazzling display of his precision and skill, one shot
behind the leader. He carded the final round of 14-under, 274.
"I just couldn't put it together on the back," Steiger said after handing in his score card after he scored six-under, 66, for the final round.
Daniel McGraw, the current Queensland Men’s Stroke Play Champion, finished off for the outright third place with a score of 10-under, 278 with a final round score was one-under, 71. Daniel Bringolf finished another stroke back with nine-under, 279, although
his final round score of three-under, came out to be better than the clubhouse leader.
Keperra Bowl marks another feather in the cap of the Golf Queensland as the arrangements and preparations for the tournament remained spot-on throughout the weekend. The official sponsors included Coca-Cola Amatil, NuTurf, Toro Australia, Regional Insurance
Brokers, Supa Fruta and The Chop Shop.
