Jake Peavy: downfall, odds and success
Jake Peavy pitched a shut-out game against a strong Cleveland Indians’ line-up and gave a 1-0 victory to Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, May 18 at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago.
The game was exciting as the right-hand pitcher virtually reduced the Indians’ hitters to nothing. To complete the victory for the White Sox, Adam Dunn scored the only and winning run in the first inning.
"I don't know what to expect coming off this surgery and I don't know how good I can be and if I can get back, but that's a lot of what I used to do tonight, but I'm just going to grind it out," Peavy said.
Jake had been struggling a great deal to prove his credential as a starting pitcher in 2007, but last night’s game revived the hopes and substantiated the fact that he still has a long way to go. Undergoing injuries and facing unpleasant odds in the recent
past, Peavy put on display a distinctly amazing performance to snatch a victory for his team.
Peavy’s pitching perfection resulted in the Indians’ inability to score. Cleveland, it is important to remember, have such a strong line-up that in the last three games that they have played, Indians scored a total of 31 runs. Peavy had his fifth career
shut-out and as a whole, ninth complete game.
Jake had represented San Diego Padres as an ace par excellence. Peavy was also entitled to 2007 NL Cy Young Award. For years, White Sox put all their efforts to buy the player. Despite Padres’ willingness to offer Peavy up, the pitcher himself showed no
enthusiasm to move. However in 2009, Peavy finally showed his acceptance to a deal and became part of the White Sox.
"The ultimate decision was when the team you're playing for actively keeps telling you they need to move you, and one team comes after you like Chicago did, you're excited to play for a team where you know you're wanted," Peavy had said.
Peavy, since then, has never looked back. The starting pitcher has imbued himself with confidence and has constantly put his entire efforts into producing games of excellence. Epic that his last night’s performance was, he still retains the memory of what
had happened only a couple of years ago. While he has an impressive 11-6 record in 22 starts, he is genuinely looking forward to give a performance of higher calibre.
To state the undeniable truth, Peavy was the story of the night with his pitching brilliance and giving his team a sorely needed victory against a squad that is deemed one of the strongest this season.
Justin Masterson, the starting pitcher of Cleveland Indians was a worthy rival to Peavy, but somehow failed to stop him. Peavy put in a brilliant pitching performance as he led from the front and managed to restrict the Indians’ offence from scoring throughout
the game. The White Sox will be looking to Peavy to guide them during the season and dominate teams with his tremendous pitching talents. It will be interesting to see how Peavy can carry his winning momentum forward to their next match-up.
The White Sox, with Peavy at the top of the pitching order, are all set to have a good season and stamp their authority in the League.
