Jake Peavy sparks as Chicago White Sox defeat Chicago Cubs 4-3 – MLB Update
Chicago White Sox’ starter, Jake Peavy had a notable day with his pitching as he threw just over five innings with an ERA of 4.72 and struck-out five batters in the White Sox 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago on June 22.
The White Sox snatched the three-game series 2-1 after winning a crucial game.
In the first inning, Kosuke Fukudome got out at centre-field and Aramis Ramirez flied out to right-field. The White Sox batters also failed to post some runs as Brent Morel was struck-out swinging and Alexei Ramirez fouled out to third base. The score-board
remained empty until the third inning.
At the bottom of the fourth inning, the White Sox batters stepped on the gas and blasted three runs to get an initial 3-0 lead. A. J. Pierzynski tripled to deep right-centre while Ramirez and Alex Rios added the first two runs for the White Sox. The third
run was taken by Pierzynski on the drive of Brent Lillibridge towards pitcher.
Both teams started to put runs on their individual score-cards during the fifth inning and advanced it to 4-1. Starlin Castro singled to centre-field and Fukudome posted one run at the top of the fifth while Ramirez scored a single run to extend the White
Sox lead when Lillibridge hit an infield shot off the left.
The Cubs were able to add only two runs in the sixth inning to reduce their lead 4-3. Carlos Pena struck a one-run homer towards centre-field to contribute one run while the last run of the game was taken by Alfonso Soriano when Jeff Baker singled to shallow
left-field.
The pitchers did not permit a run in the last three innings. Peavy allowed three runs on seven hits including three earned runs and gave only three walks on his 104 pitches. Speaking to reporters, Peavy said, “I had a tough time coming off. I had a tough
time swallowing the way my start went. Going to say stuff to each other at times that might not sit well with the other.”
The Cubs’ starter, Doug Davis was a little bit shaky as he pitched five innings with an ERA of 5.01 and gave four runs on eight hits including three earned runs.
