Jake Scott and Tim Macdonald advance to Round 4 at CHIKO Pro Junior – Surfing News
Australia’s Jake Scott and Tim Macdonald managed to claim victories in their Round 3 (Round of 64) heats of CHIKO Pro Junior at Newcastle’s Surfest that continued at the renowned Merewether Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday, March 9.
After the demanding six-foot waves on Thursday, the four-to-five foot waves breaking at the primary event site on Friday turned out to be quite promising, giving the surfers a much bigger opportunity of unleashing their technical arsenal and posting decent
scores on the score-board.
The 4-Star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Men’s Junior Qualifying event was pretty intense so far, with the young surfers putting in a commendable effort to get closer to the $20,000 prize money and ASP Junior rating points on offer.
During the third heat of Round 3, Scott found himself pitted against his compatriots Oscar Scanes and Hamish Renwick, along with Japanese Arashi Kato.
It turned out to be an intense battle for top honours with both Scott and Kato putting on a commendable fight, hardly allowing the other to gain a significant advantage. However, the Australian surfer managed to eventually grab the win by posting a 3.75
and 6.65 on the score-board for a heat-total of 10.40 points against his rival’s two-wave total of 10.25 points, beating the latter by merely 0.15 points.
Both the surfers advanced through into the next round after finishing in first and second place respectively.
Scanes rounded out the third place after scoring a heat-total of 7.35 points, while Renwick settled for the last place with a heat-total of 6.50 points. The lacklustre performance by the two surfers led to their ejection from the race for the event title.
The fourth heat saw Macdonald square off with fellow countrymen Josh Radford and Tylah Hutchinson, along with Japan’s Hiroto Arai.
Macdonald got off to a promising start, posting a 5.50 on the score-board off his first business-wave and later added an additional 3.60 to his account to get to a heat-total of 9.10 point. The score remained unbeatable, carrying the Australian into Round
4 (Round of 32).
Radford managed to extend his life in the event as well by securing runner-up place with a heat-total of 7.90 points, which included a 3.25 and 4.65 points.
Arai finished third with 5.80 points, while Hutchinson rounded out the fourth position with 4.25 points. Both the surfers got eliminated from the competition as a result.
