Jake White steps back from wanting Springboks Rugby Coach role – Rugby News
Springboks former World Cup winning head coach, Jake White, who has recently returned to coaching duties after assuming charge of the Australian Super Rugby franchise, ACT Brumbies, has stepped
backed from his statement that he is interested in becoming Springboks Rugby coach.
White confirmed that he will see his contract through with the Brumbies on Tuesday, October 11. He said, “I've got a contract here in Canberra, I'm enjoying putting the program together with
a great group of staff and players and I'm definitely not leaving.”
Earlier, White publically announced his candidature ship for the position of the Springboks head coach, following Springboks world cup ending defeat, which they suffered at the hands of the
Wallabies. Springboks were defeated by Wallabies 11 – 9 in the quarter-final of the 2011 Rugby World Cup to end the defending champions campaign.
Following, Springboks exit from the ongoing RWC tournament, few segments of media reported that their current head coach, Peter de Villiers, has taken pre-mature retirement from the role.
However, on Monday, October 9 de Villiers ruled out any such move and confirmed that he will see his current contract through. He added that he is unsure about his future, but he will remain
in charge of the side until the month of December.
De Villiers added, “I never resigned. I just said it was the end of the road for me. There is one logical thing and it is that I had a four-year contract and the day I signed that contract
four years back I knew this day would come.”
In 2007, De Villiers was named as the head coach of the Springboks world cup-winning unit, in place of their Jake White. Following the rumor of De Villiers resignation from the duty, White
was quick to show his interest.
However, White now has denied any such move for next four years. He added, “I will not turn my back on South Africa but for at least the next four years I am 100 per cent committed to leading
the Brumbies and returning Super Rugby success to the people of Canberra.”
White confirmed his desire of taking the role of the Springboks head coach. He added that returning to South Africa and to coach theri national side again is one his future ambitions.
White will return to Australia to join the rest of the squad, in their pre season training, which will start on Monday, October 24. Brumbies has a poor 2011 Super Rugby season, as they finished
13th in the table with their 33 points coming from their 16 matches in the season.
