Jakob Fuglsang confirmed as RadioShack-Nissan-Trek’s leader for the Giro d’ Italia 2012
One of the strongest teams for the coming season, RadioShack-Nissan-Trek, recently made it official that Jakob Fuglsang will lead the team in Giro d’ Italia 2012.
The Dane will start his season in February through the Mallorca Challenge, scheduled from February 5-9, and will participate in the Tour of Oman from February 14-19.
He will also participate in the Three Days of West Flanders, Volta a Catalunya, Circuit La Sarthe and the Tour de Romandie before the Italian Grand Tour.
Fuglsang has also shown interest to test some of the Giro stages to ensure a complete understanding of the tour.
He told Feltet.dk, "I expect a lot of the Giro and I look forward to the Giro. It will of course be tough, but I am ready to fight and will do everything to be sharp when the Giro starts in Herning".
The 26-year-old mentioned that he is determined to do his best at the contest and will not let his side down. His main goal is to be amongst the top five cyclists after the final general classifications.
He said, “I think it is realistic, if everything works out. It's still three weeks of racing, and it is certainly not easy, but it is my overall goal”.
One interesting aspect is that Fuglsang has never raced at the Giro d’ Italia and will make a debut appearance at the race in 2012.
He has four Grand Tour appearances to his credit, including two Tour de France and two Vuelta a Espana participations.
The Dane finished 11th during Vuelta a Espana 2011, after finishing 5 minutes and 50 seconds behind the race leader, Juan Jose Cobo. He also secured the initial stage win at the same Spanish Grand Tour.
Fuglsang admitted the fact that the main reason behind his 11th place finish at the Vuelta was the sloppy performance at the mountains. The cyclist briefed that his preparations were not 100 % and he was a bit overweight as well.
Jakob will lead the team through to the Italian grand tour whereas Andy Schleck and Frank Schleck will take the RadioShack-Nissan-Trek squad to the Tour de France 2012. Andy, a three time runner-up of the event is looking forward to make it his first ever
Grand Tour win.
