Jakob Fuglsang ruled out of the Giro d’ Italia after the Tour of Catalunya injury
Jakob Fuglsang will miss the opportunity to represent Team RadioShack-Nissan at the first Grand Tour race of the season, the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
The cyclist is experiencing knee injuries which prevented him from starting the third stage of the Tour de Romandie.
He was looking ahead at the Giro as a major goal of his 2012 season and is disappointed on missing such a good opportunity.
Jakob has raced at the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana previously and was optimistic to mark his debut at the Italian race for the 2012 season.
He briefed, "I am very disappointed, the Giro was my big objective for this year. Yesterday I had so much pain in the last 40K,”
“At that point I realized that it might be the end of my Giro dream. Moreover I was already running behind my schedule after the scaphoid bone fracture in the Tour of Catalunya".
The 27-year old started his professional crusade with the Danish side, Team Saxo Bank in 2009 and stayed with the team by the end of 2010 season.
He accepted an offer from Team Leopard Trek in 2011 and is an important part of the newly formed, Team RadioShack-Nissan.
Fuglsang had a good past season and claimed stages at the Danmark Rundt and the Vuelta a Espana along with the 4th overall position at the Amstel Gold Race and the Tour de Suisse 2011.
He has struggled to find his previous form in the 2012 season and has not registered any victories in the season yet.
Jakob was optimistic to mark his debut appearance at the Giro but the injury has shattered his dreams.
The 2012 edition of the Italian Grand Tour is scheduled on May 5th which leaves no time of recovery for the young Dane.
Team Doctor Andreas Gosele noted, “With a quick and intensive therapy, Jakob would possibly be able to start at the Giro, but with how much risk?”
“A good result would be out of the question and if he would have to drop out after ten stages, what would we have accomplished?” he concluded.
Johan Bruyneel is Fuglsang’s Team Manager and he also regretted the injury. He is now busy altering the plans to fill in the spot left vacant by Jakob’s injury ahead of the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
