Jakob Fuglsang will assist Andy Schleck at the Tour de France 2012
Jakob Fuglsang of Team RadioShack-Nissan-Trek is having a dry season and the cyclist is looking ahead at the Tour de France as the biggest goal of his 2012 season.
His initial plans were to lead the Team at the Giro d’ Italia but the knee injury at the crucial time has restricted him from riding the Italian race.
Frank Schleck will now lead the Luxembourg based team at the race whereas Jakob will assist Andy at the Tour de France.
The Swiss was initially disappointed after missing on such a crucial chance, but has now accepted his fate.
He told sporrten.dk, “We have quite quickly set some new goals, and it helps me to look forward”.
“Initially I ride the Bayern Rundfahrt and the Tour of Luxembourg, and then the goal is that I should ride the Tour de France”.
The 27-year-old started his professional pursuit with Team Saxo Bank in 2009 and spent a period of two years with the side.
He accepted an offer from Team Leopard Trek in 2011 and is continuing his second consecutive season with the team.
Fuglsang participated in the 2010 and the 2011 version of the Tour de France and also holds two Vuelta a Espana participations under his belt.
He achieved the 50 overall positions during the 2010 and the 2011 editions of the French Grand Tour and finished 11th overall during the Vuelta a Espana 2011.
Team General Manager Johan Bruyneel noted, “There was no reason to take a chance with the Giro. He would not risk that I be forced to retire because he would rather use me for the Tour de France”.
“There are of course many changes on the team right now, so I do not know if that's changed on whether Fränk Schleck to ride the Tour”.
Fuglsang has not registered any victories in the season yet and is determined to find his winning ways at the Tour de France.
The main reason behind his dipping performance was because of the knee injury that he experienced during a training crash at the Tour de Romandie.
The cyclist also broke his hand during the race and will test his form at the Italian Grand Tour scheduled from May 5-27, 2012.
