Jakob Fuglsang's personal ambitions could be thwarted by his team in 2011
Danish rider Jakob Fuglsang has said he is uncertain whether he will captain the Luxembourg PRO Cycling Project at the 2011 Giro d'Italia as the team prepares for the Tour de France in July.
Like star trio Andy and Frank Schleck and Fabian Cancellara, Fuglsang has joined the Luxembourgian outfit from Saxo Bank for next season. The Dane was originally intended to be the team's captain at next year's Giro.
But as a result of Andy Schleck's ambitions at the Tour, the team's priorities may be shifted away from the Giro in order to support their bid for the Grand Boucle.
"The initial idea was that I would be leader at the Giro but this is something we've only talked about," Fuglsang told Danish daily
Ekstra Bladet. "I don’t know if it’s been finalised because we’ve also discussed how the Giro might be too hard if you’re also going to ride the Tour."
Schleck desperate for first Tour title
Andy Schleck finished second behind Alberto Contador in the last two editions of the Tour, winning the young riders classification both times.
Next year, the rider will be 26 and therefore ineligible to compete as a young rider, but he will be more eager than ever to finally finish on top of the podium in Paris.
"I am riding for a new team, which makes the Tour de France even more important," Fuglsang continued. "Andy has a good chance of winning, so it would be a shame if he does not get maximum support."
While supporting his team's Tour ambitions, Fuglsang, who came third in this year's edition of the Tour de Suisse, admitted that his own ambitions are at odds with the demands of his team.
"I don't know what I'd rather do. Of course I want to be 100 per cent ready for the Tour de France and help Andy to win, but I would also like to test myself as a captain."
