Jalen Rose released after serving 16 days in prison – NBA Update
After completing his jail time, former NBA star and analyst Jalen Rose was released from the Oakland County Jail on Thursday. Rose who was a member of the famed Fabulous Five had been sentenced for 20 days under the charges of
drunk driving and intoxication.
He had received her punishment from one of the harshest judges on the Michigan court circuit, Kimberly Small. The 38 year old started serving his time on August 2 and was released yesterday after serving only16 days.
The original incident took place earlier this March when Rose crashed his SUV in West Bloomfield Township. At the time of the incident, Rose had vehemently denied any wrong doing and even after his blood sample test showed an increased
level of alcohol, he refused to admit his fault. However, in May, in the court, Rose pleaded guilty and confessed that he had shot 6 pints of Martini before taking over the wheel.
Small was not in a lenient mood at the time of the hearing and dished out a long lecture followed by his punishment. According to Small, time in prison was the “right punishment” for Rose as it will help him realize the danger
his actions held. Under Michigan Law, the maximum punishment time for such offenders is 93 days. However, there is no lower limit and Rose was apparently let go with just a warning.
Rose’s lawyer James Burdick however still stated that keeping his client’s past record in view, he should not have been sentenced to jail, and especially not after Rose had apologized for his actions.
"He is the most hands-on socially conscious and charitable person I have known," Burdick wrote in an email. "He is the last person, in my opinion, for the judge to have imposed her rule that everyone with DUI 'must' be sent to
jail."
Rose did not help his cause as he only hours after receiving his sentence, he was issued a speeding ticket in the Detroit area of Clawson. According to police reports, Rose was cruising at a speed of 46 mph, whereas the upper limit
was only 25 mph. This earned him a ticket for driving at least 10 mph over the speed barrier.
In his early years, Jalen was a member of the famous Fabulous Five, which included the likes of Juwan Howard, Chris Webber, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. This group of five is best remembered as having transformed the way college
basketball was played. They twice qualified for the final four of the NCAA Basketball tournament.
Rose was then drafted into the NBA in 1995 and enjoyed a 13 year career with 6 different teams. He spent most of his playing days at the Indiana Pacers, however, he had his most successful spell with the Chicago Bulls, where he
scored a career high 23.8 points per game in the 01/02 season.
