Jalil Khan returns to Pakistan to represent his country at the Davis Cup – Tennis News
Former Pakistani number two, Jalil Khan, has come back from USA to Pakistan in order to represent his national team at next year’s Davis Cup competition.
Khan will first appear in the trials to get back into the team and take part in Pakistan versus Sri Lanka Asia/Oceania Zone, Group II first round tie to be held in Colombo from February 1 to 3 next year.
The right-handed player was in training in USA for almost last one year to do a good job for his country at the biggest team event in the sport of tennis. Pakistan will be trying to down their opponents to win Group II this year and reclaim their position
in Group I.
Talking to a local news reporter, Jalil said, “I came back to Pakistan as I feel that it is my national and moral duty to help country in the time of need. I prepared hard in US for the past 7 months to help Pakistan win the crucial Davis Cup tie against
Sri Lanka.”
Jalil played in his country’s second round tie against Philippines last season. Pakistan got a 0-5 thrashing in the away tie, in which Jalil and his elder brother, Aqeel Khan, lost the doubles match in straight sets.
It is not confirm yet whether Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who is Pakistan’s most successful tennis player ever, will take part in the tie or not. If Qureshi decides to stay away from the tie, like he did against Philippines last year, then the entire burden will
be on the shoulders of Aqeel and Jalil.
As Qureshi does not play any tournaments in Pakistan, Aqeel is national number one for the last 12 years now. Jalil had occupied the number two spot during most of this period.
He added, “I left Pakistan when my ranking was No. 2 but now my ranking slipped to No. 5 spot and I would soon regain my national rankings.”
Jalil, who made his Davis Cup debut for Pakistan in 2004, has played seven singles and three doubles matches at this competition so far in his career.
