I live in Australia and I was wondering why jam over here is called jelly in America (As in peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches and over here it's peanut-butter and jam sandwiches!) and jelly over here is jam in America? I am so confused!

  1. jelly

  2. we have jam too. It's more natural and jelly has gelatin, yuk. I like preserves

  3. Jam and Jelly are two different things.  see  references.

  4. Well it would be correct if you knew the difference between jelly and jam.

Jam is made out of the fruit juice and, jelly is made out of the actual fruit.

so if there using jam then it is a peanut-butter and jam sandwich.

  5. Haha im not sure.

I live in Canada and here, jelly is usually clear-ish where as jam has lots of chunks of fruit and stuff in it.

we say peanut butter and jam.

  6. There are differences between jam and jelly here but I think it is kind of like fries and chips and also football and soccer, and driving on different sides of the road. Not sure why but we are all just a little different.

Just call it PB&J and then it is all cleared up.

  7. Jam has chunks of fruit in it.  Jelly is usually made of the juice of an item.  Then again, there are preserves which appear to be jam, but are much more syrup-y than jam.

Then let's remember there's marmalade.  Usually made of a citrus-based fruit, but can sometimes be made with other fruit.

Confusing.  Yet all wonderfully sticky and delicious.
