  1. Its easier to pour some water in a 13x9 pan and place the jars upside-down in it. Then place it on a burner till the water comes to a boil.turn it off and the water goes up into the jars. when you get ready to fill them, just pick up a jar, pour the water out and fill. Lids can go in  a pan of water on top of the stove, too.

  2. sterilize your jars in a water bath, not the oven.  Then as soon asyou put your jam in the jars, top w/ lid and ring, and return to the water bath to seal for 15-20 min  (whatever your recipe says).

  3. Low oven heat - lids too - hot jam in hot jars - seal straight away.

Don't forget to do the wrinkle test on a saucer to make sure its set.

  4. You need to let the jam cool for ten minutes or so before pouring it into the jars, else the fruit all rises to the surface.

And I'm sure you know to add the juice of a lemon for the pectin to help the jam set. This also enhances its flavour.

  5. You do not need to put jars in the oven. If you have a dishwasher that is good enough. Even if you don't washing jars, lids and rings in very hot water is all you need.If it's a cooked jam you need to seal right away. Freezer jam is easier and taste better. (my opinion)
