Jamaica Inn - Author's Message?

over the summer i have a reading project and i had to read a book and answer some questions. i read the book jamaica inn by daphne du maurier and i can't figure out the author's message or theme of the book. i've thinking about it for like the past three days and i can't think of anything. please help me if you can.

I read it so long ago (and enjoyed it) that I can hardly remember the book in detail.
