Jamaica - excursions?

We are traveling to Jamaica (Sunset Beach Resort, Freeport) next January.

I wanted to know if there are any good excursions to do around Jamaica thats worth doing. We like all sorts of things from adventurous to scenic and historic. We are huge Bob Marley fans and would like to go and visit his birth and burial place if we can but we are not sure if you are allowed to do this? What sort of prices are we looking at for the excursions.

Plus if anyone has stayed at the same hotel, reviews would be nice.

  1. Bel and kay have made some excellent suggestions and Cool Runnings Tours Jamaica (www.coolrunningstoursja.com) is able to take you everywhere you want to go safely and for a reasonable cost.  Contact us at info@coolrunningstoursja.com.

  2. Hiya, I used to live just outside of Montego Bay and Sunset Beach is really quite nice, if a little out of the way.  For your location I would definitely suggest a trip to Negril, which is just up the coast.  here you can go to Rick's Cafe and watch the locals cliff diving (and even attempt it yourself).  The view of the sunset is spectacular on a clear day and very romantic too.

Other day trips you can look at are Dolphin Cove and Dunns River Falls, these are in Ocho Rios and will take you roughly 1-2 hours to get there, maybe more if traffic is bad.  If you don't mind being cooped up in a minibus all day long then I would recommend the Blue Mountains tour, which takes you up into the island's rainforests and lets you see another side of Jamaica.  Be warned though, the trip is very long and the road very bumpy with lots of roadworks at present.

The Green Grotto Caves are also very nice and have a lot of history behind them - they are just between Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay.  Don't look up with your mouth open though, that's all I'll say! lol

You can get trips to Bob Marley's house, although I have heard it is a bit disappointing.

Aside from those there are the usual things you would expect - horse riding, kite surfing, scuba diving, jet-skis etc etc.

Prices will be higher if you book through your hotel, but I can't stress enough that you shouldn't ask a local to take you.  Many will take you there and back safely but it is simply not worth the risk.  You will be charged in $US in most places, but often it is cheaper to use the local currency - check out exchange rates before you head off.

    Have fun!!!!

  3. I know Sunset Beach Resort is a wonderful place. In Mobay as we call it you can try out the nightlife if you into that meaning, you can visit the Night clubs on the 'hip strip' for instance Margaritaville(its really cool in the day as well) and right across from Margaritaville there is a casino if you are interested and there are some great restaurants. there are some historical sites as well; there is Rose Hall Great House just outside Mobay and the parish museum (Civic Centre). the craft market is really fun as well. as far as prices go i'm not sure what you looking at, perhaps a minimum of $15-$20 Us dollars per entry to historic sites and about $10US for others

Yes you can take the trip to Negril about 45 mins away, you should definitely check out Kool Runnings Water Park, fun for all ages, you looking at about $25-$30US per person its less for children there's Rick's Cafe as well for experienced divers and brave ones(unlike myself), there's Negril Lighthouse pretty romantic especially at sunset.

You say you are a huge fan of Bob Marley there is the Bob Marley museum in Kingston about 31/2 hours away, its a learning experience that's wonderful i've been there so i know. i think u can request a visit to his burial place i'm not sure about the birth. but the museum was once a place where he lived.

If u have a day you can visit Dunn's river falls in Ocho Rios and green grotto caves or you can go to Black River to experience the Black River Safari and Lover's Leap(yes the name is based off a love story) both are about 1 1/2 hours from mobay (in different directions).

it's probably best to get local currency when come out it's cheaper. there're so many things to do here but it really depends on how much time and money you are willing to spend. i suppose you can book a tour bus or just go out and experience the real JA (in terms of buses and taxies (car and bike) though i wouldn't recommend it.

remember to Pack you sunscreen and a good sum of cash and enjoy yourself
