Question:

Jamaica in April?

I would like to visit Jamaica this April. However, I have been getting mixed reviews. I would like to know if Jamaica's carnival is worth the trip, how dangerous it is, how is the nightlife, and if there are any other tips I should know? How bad is the gang violence there? Also I have been to St. Martin's, Anguilla's, and many West Indian carnivals in the US, is Jamaica's anything like theirs? Oh by the way I am not planning to be in some man made fantasy/ secluded part of Jamaica.

Thanks for the help!

  1. Bachanaaallll! Carnival in Jamaica is great. It is hosted in spots accross the country with the final grand road march in Kingston, the party that follows goes until morning light.

As with travel anyplace you need be careful and mindful of your surroundings.

If you want great nightlife stay in Kingston. Great hotels in New Kingston and the hottest clubs a 5 mins walk from the hotels

  2. Well the weather should be ideal. In April it usually rains in the mid afternoon, just a light warm rain. It's not too windy and it's not too hot.

Regarding the other stuff. You just have to use common sense. There are good and bad people everywhere. Jamaica is a 3rd world country and they are very poor so a tourist is prime for being jacked.

If you're going into the heart of Jamaica you should probably find a guide or driver of some form that is trustworthy.

I've been there three times. It's beautiful, it's paradise, but it's third world.

  3. You cannot even compare the St. Martin, Anguilla etc, carnival to that of Jamaica!! It is good.

Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios are the best places to stay. They are tourist oriented and do not be alarmed when a local offers you to act as your guide! They are just trying to make some bucks. Best places to stay are the all inclusive resorts of superclubs or sandals(for couples), if you can afford it.

There are many small hotels that are good and economical. My favorite was Glenn's just a few miles outside Ocho Rios and opposite COUPLES hotel.

Do not worry about gang violence unless you have some bone to pick there!

Make your bus driver your freind! They'll go out of their way to make your experience a memorable one. Fix the price first however. Also, before you step outside the airport make your transport arrangement to your destination. They have counters as you exit the  customs.

And finally, travel to Montego Bay airport as it is ideally located in between Negril and Ocho Rios. And very very convenient if you decide to stay in Montego Bay itself!

Your driver can guide you nightlife places and yes avoid secluded parts in the night.

  4. Jamaica is like anyplace else.  There are safer places and more dangerous places.  When we were in Negril, even the locals warned us to stay away from downtown Negril.  Montego Bay was different.  The locals there seemed to like tourists and the money they spend.  Whereever you go, be always aware of your surroundings, don't drink too much.  Remember that pot is illegal there despite Jamaica's rep.  Travel in a group if you can.
