James Allison: Renault not fast enough at the moment, slow improvement punishable in F1 – Formula 1
Renault technical director James Allison has stated that his team is still not fast enough in the races as was the case in the Silverstone Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Allison added that development is required at every level of the Formula 1 season and Renault rested for some time after the first two races which showed its result as now Mercedes have overtaken them in the constructors’ table.
He added that slow development in Formula 1 means going backwards and Renault have been too slow in the 2011 season which is why they had to pay the price.
Allison stated, “Sadly, just the simple fact that although we redeemed ourselves to a degree in the race, we are not fast enough at the moment. It is easy to explain, less easy to correct. Improving slowly is the same as going backwards and we have improved
too slowly.”
He further added that, “I am confident that we will shortly deliver these gains, but I would prefer to let the car do the talking in the coming races rather than to give chapter and verse on what we intend to bring to the track.”
After starting the season all out, Renault were outperformed mostly by the midfield runners which allowed the Mercedes team to climb up the points table and take the fourth position.
Further talking about the upcoming German Grand Prix, Allison stated that it was not a very complicated circuit and the only problem was that the Formula 1 world visits this circuit every two years.
Allison added that the only difference on the track will be that for the first time, Formula 1 teams will have blown diffusers on the car which will be interesting.
Renault have two podium positions to their name which came in the opening two races of the season in Australia and Malaysia. Although Mercedes have no podium position yet in the 2011 season they have overtook the Renault team in the 2011 championship through
consistent improvement.
