James Allison hopes Adrian Newey is wrong and Renault do not suffer from Diffuser ban – Formula 1
Renault technical director James Allison has stated that the Renault team is prepared to take on the challenge of the Blown Diffuser clampdown which is going to be implemented from the Silverstone Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Allison hoped that Adrian Newey’s views about Renault suffering more than any other team are not right.
Allison said, “I hope he's not right, but if we are we are. I'm on record already as saying I would have preferred the status quo to have remained until the end of the year, but we'll just get on with it like everyone else.”
He further added that he is also against the Blown Diffuser clampdown halfway through the season but will now get on with it as the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is firm on its decision.
The Renault technical director warned that they will lose some downforce in the process but the balance of the car will not be affected. He further added that Silverstone will be tough for the Renault car and it is there that the performance of the R31 will
be judged for the rest of the season.
Renault developed their car in such a way that their exhaust gases are blown at the side of the car rather than blowing under the body.
Newey stated that Renault will be jolted badly from the Diffuser ban since they designed their car around the diffuser technology.
Allison further added, “We'd be foolish to enter the race without some idea of what it was going to do. I don't think we would be alone in having had a little look at it at the last race either, because it's perfectly possible to mode in those engine mapping
configurations and see how it behaved last race, so we did that.”
James said that this type of rule was not anticipated halfway through the season so the team used the technology to full benefit.
