James Allison unsure of engine mapping ban ahead of European Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Lotus Renault GP technical director James Allison has said that banning engine mapping will not affect Renault or maybe the rest of the teams on the grid either as this ban is not going to have much impact on each team’s respective performance.
“It is not easy to judge the effect of this change on our competitiveness. The loss for each blown floor car will come from two separate effects - how much downforce will you lose and, in addition, how much will the loss of this downforce upset the balance
of the car,” Allison told the media.
Reports have revealed that the officials of the sport recently wrote to the teams before the European Grand Prix in order to inform them of a change in the sport’s rules.
According to this change, the teams will not be allowed to map their respective cars’ engines between the qualifying session and the race of each grand prix from now on which means that the teams will have to map their engines before the qualifying session
for both the session and the race.
“All blown floor cars will loose downforce under braking as a result of these new restrictions. Some teams will lose more and some teams less; it is hard to know exactly what relative loss LRGP will suffer,” said the technical director.
With the Blown Diffusers being banned from the sport starting from the British Grand Prix which is going to take place on July 10, 2011, it seems that the teams will suffer after that since some of the teams started to use the device as an aerodynamics enhancer
which is not allowed.
Allison’s statement on the other hand also clarifies the fact that engine mapping also had some affect on the rear downforce of the car as well. It is believed that the Blown Diffusers ban is going to have a lot of affect on Red Bull Racing’s performance
but engine mapping might not affect the performance of the top running teams much.
