This is Villa’s first win in five games and they have also avenged the embarrassing 6-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United which they suffered back in August 2010.

Villa opened their account in the 24th minute when Ashley Young’s delivery was met by James Collins and the defender headed it in beating Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper.

Just before the half-time mark, Bent put the ball in the back of the net but the goal was disallowed as the striker was adjudged offside. Replays later suggested that it was a wrong call as the striker was level with the last defender.

Newcastle had a great chance to rescue a point from the match as Barton’s delivery found Lovenkrands on the edge of the 6-yard box. Villa goalkeeper Friedel had to make a decent save in order to deny the striker’s header.
Villa had more ball possession in the entire match but both sides could not get many chances to score and the match ended 1-0 in favour of the Villains.
The three points after the win have ensured that Villa increase their distance from the relegation zone as they are currently sitting in 14th place in the League standings.
