James DeGale admits losing to George Groves was tough for him – Boxing news
The 2008 Summer Olympics gold medallist and former British championship belt holder, James DeGale, has admitted losing to George Groves, the reigning British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion, has been very tough for him.
The Chunky, DeGale, lost his British title to Groves via majority decision on May 21, 2011 at the O2 Wembley Arena in London. This was DeGale’s first and only career defeat as of yet. Therefore, the Brit stated it was very tough for him to accept it.
DeGale, who has won 10 of his 11 professional fights, with 8 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, told the media he had Groves as his worst enemy and losing to him was awful for him but on the same note the super middleweight contender was happy
upon getting a European title shot.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I had stitches and every time I looked in the mirror it reminded me of the fight. I’m a proud boy and I don’t like losing – especially to my worst enemy. But now I’m over it and it’s great news I’ve got this shot
at the European title.”
DeGale is set to face the current European Boxing Union’s European super middleweight champion, Piotr Wilczewski, for a shot at the European title in September 2011 with a still-to-be-decided date and venue.
DeGale also commented on his next opponent Piotr ‘Wilk’ Wilczewski, who has won 29 of his 30 professional fights, with 10 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, and claimed he is a better fighter than Groves and fighting him will definitely make him
a better fighter.
“He’s definitely better than Groves. He’s been there and done it – look at his record. But the better opponent I box, the better I fight,” DeGale remarked.
In the end, DeGale revealed he wants a rematch against Groves, as the Britain’s warrior wants to avenge his defeat.
“Groves ran like a chicken and nicked the fight from me. Hopefully he’ll keep on winning and looking good and we can have that rematch,” DeGale added.
