James DeGale promises he will be like Marvin Hagler when he takes on Piotr Wilczewski – Boxing news
The 2008 Summer Olympics gold medallist and former British champion, James ‘The Chunky’ DeGale, has promised he will be more like the middleweight legend Marvin Hagler in his upcoming fight against the European Boxing Union’s European super middleweight
champion, Piotr Wilczewski.
The 25-year-old from Nottingham, DeGale, who will challenge the 33-year-old Wilk, Wilczewski, for his EBU title in September 2011 with a yet-to-be-decided date and venue, told the media he has learnt a lot after losing his British title to George Groves.
DeGale and Groves match was more like a mini war which went all the way before DeGale lost the battle on a highly controversial split decision. Therefore, the Brit reckons he should have been more aggressive during the fight.
DeGale said, “I learnt a lot from it. I shouldn't have allowed the first eight rounds to turn into a sparring session.”
DeGale, who has won 10 of his 11 professional fights, with 8 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, vowed in front of the media that people are going to see a much better version of him against Wilczewski.
DeGale stated he is going to fight like the Marvelous Marvin Hagler, who held a record of winning 62 of his 67 professional fight (2 Draws) and 52 of his wins came by way of a knockout. He also revealed he will specifically focus on Hagler’s legendary fight
with Thomas Hearns, which is widely known as ‘the war.’
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “A fighter that Jimmy and I have discussed is Marvin Hagler, and specifically his fight with Tommy Hearns. Hagler went to war against Hearns straight away, and if I had done that against Groves, I would have won
the fight, easy.”
“I've been working on being more aggressive and cutting down the ring. You are not going to see a completely different fighter next time I box, but I will be an improved version of the one everybody saw in May,” DeGale added.
