James Driscoll leads after first round of Puerto Rico Open - Golf news
James Driscoll smashed a score of 9-under-63 in the first round of the Puerto Rico Open taking place at the Trump International Golf Club to surge into clubhouse lead on Thursday.
The player teed from the back with an incredible pace. He birdied the par-4 12th hole after hitting a 5-iron on the fairway that left him three feet from the pin.
On the next hole, Driscoll once again made use of the 8-iron in firing the second shot, which eventually helped him work a quick warm up. The crowd cheered at the early advances, which buoyed the morale of the 33-year-old. Taking advantage of the situation,
the player hammered another set of four back-to-back birdies at the closing holes and rocketed up with a score of six-under.
However, the American did not stop there. He marched to the front with iron as his weapon and birdied the three opening holes of the front to startle the field.
But the real drama started on the fifth tee, when Driscoll drove the shot into the trees on the right. The player did not lose his cool and wedged a perfect shot out of the trees, which left him two feet away from the pin. Without much analysis, Driscoll
aced the par-5 fifth hole and rose to a grand total of 11-under, which gave him a margin of five strokes over a group of three players.
Driscoll dropped a shot at the seventh and missed a par putt at the eighth, which forced him to settle at nine-under par.
The leader was extremely happy over his game. While speaking to the press he said, “The last couple days in the practice rounds and the Pro Am the wind was blowing pretty good, especially in the morning. I played early on Wednesday, and the wind was blowing
about 20 miles an hour, you know, at 8:00 in the morning. So it was kind of one of those days where you felt like you got a little bit of luck but also good shots.”
